About Bearskin

Since 1925, Bearskin Lodge on the Gunflint Trail has been one of Minnesota's favorite wilderness resort destinations. The McCloughan family has owned Bearskin since 2007.

Monday, 12/28/08 Wind & snow

Today started off with wicked winds and 3 inches or more of new snow.  A good percentage of yesterday’s newly groomed trails blew shut today. Skiers reported that many trails were an odd mix of completely groomed sections and drifted over areas.

Groomers at both resorts were out today. Bob did most of the system on the Bearskin side and will be out on Bear Cub very early Tuesday morning.  The wind continues to be very strong; it’s hard to believe today’s nice tracks will last.

Temps are getting a bit colder.  Hopefully that may put an end to the slush problem on the lakes.

Sunday, 12/28/08 Cooler days and newly groomed trails

Saturday’s “warm” temps played total havoc with the trails. Huge slush spots visibly grew by the hour on the lakes. By mid-afternoon, skiers were coming back from every trail totally encrusted in ice. It was a mess and there wasn’t a thing that could be done about it.

Fortunately, groomers at both Bearskin and Golden Eagle went out very early Sunday morning and most of the trails groomed up surprisingly well. Skiers came back all day reporting that the newly groomed trails were great.

What’s not good? Anything across water at this point is a slushy mess. The ice underneath is very thick — ice depth is not an issue. But recent conditions have caused water to seep up into the snow layer to form a slush; the warm temps yesterday just added to the poor conditions. We hope some colder night temps will eventually harden up this miserable stuff.  Meanwhile, there are a number of ways on this trail system to circumvent trails that cross water.  We recommend that for the time being you ski on routes that aren’t on lakes if possible.

Considering our seriously sub-zero temps before Christmas, it feels wrong to start wishing for colder weather again.  But a little drop in temps would be helpful at this point.

Wednesday, 12/24 Trail Report from Golden Eagle

Trail conditions from the Golden Eagle side of the Central Gunflint trail system, as reported on 12/24:  “Conditions:  Good to Excellent Skiing for Classic and Freestyle

Comments:  Groomer is out today!  Overall we have a good packed base for
skating, trails are leveling out and the tracks are very nice.   Lake trails
are being packed with the snowmobile with no tracks being set.   The ice is
good but there is some slush beginning to show so we will continue packing
those trails in.  What a great start to the ski season!

We hope to see you all skiing this winter! “

Tuesday, 12/23 Trail Conditions

Trails were regroomed on the 22nd. Skiers report “excellent” conditions nearly everywhere.  Due to early season rolling and packing there is a good firm base on the trails.  Classic tracks are hard and fast.  New corduroy set up beautifully, but skating is slow due to cold temps.   As of noon on 12/23 new snow was falling, so there’s probably an inch or two of light power on the trails.

Monday, 12/22/08 Trail Conditions

Entire system is groomed and tracked. Quinn and Bob were out Monday with both groomers  to regroom after the 4 inches we picked up Saturday night. Because of early rolling and packing  and cold snow conditions, the skate lanes are very firm.   Average of 15 inches of snow in the woods with depths up to 20  Consistent 6 inches of base throughout the system with considerably more in many places.  The North South Link trail across Aspen Lake is closed at the moment due to extremely slushy conditions and a short section of Poplar Creek is less than perfect as it travels through a swamp with hummocks and frost heaves.  Otherwise conditions are good to excellent.

Grooming with the Tidd Tech

Let the ski season begin! Sort of…

The beauty of Bearskin’s new Tidd Tech groomer is that this machine can start grooming far before our pisten bully can get out on the trails. We haven’t had a huge amount of snow yet, but as soon as we had a small layer of snow, Quinn went out and groomed the trails on the lake, the campground loop and Summer Home Road. He’s experimented with putting double track in already on those locations and figures that with just a little more snow (and it is coming down now) he should be able to lay some decent tracks.

Quinn, Andy, Bob and a few guests were out skiing over the last few days. Bob skated all the packed trails and found it to be surpisingly good. Quinn and Andy skiied down the lake and out into unpacked, ungroomed areas, breaking their own trails. Conditions are excellent for that type of skiing, also.

Summer Home Road

A gentle snow is falling today. It looks exactly like the animated snow you often see on websites this time of year (like this one right now!) — uniform, round flakes slowly and consistently falling straight downward. The accumulated snow should make this early season skiing even better.
